The Boardwalk at Coney Island
Anyone who knows Coney Island knows you don't go for crystal-clear water. You go for the atmosphere and the vibe. This piece is about that specific, heavy-air feeling at the end of a long beach day. That late afternoon sun piercing through the shops and stands on the right created these long, dramatic shadows which I love to include in watercolor. For this piece, I wet both the front and back of the paper before painting. Keeping the sheet saturated from both sides bought me extra time to work wet-into-wet, allowing me to smoothly manipulate the hazy atmosphere for much longer than usual. The rides in the background were also great composition elements and super fun to paint. It reminded me of painting bridges, only vertical.
