Anyone who knows Coney Island knows you don't go for crystal-clear water. You go for the atmosphere and the vibe. I wanted to capture that heavy-air feeling at the end of a long beach day. The late afternoon light through the shops and stands on the right created these long, dramatic shadows which I love to include in my paintings. For this piece, I wet both the front and back of the paper before painting. Keeping the sheet saturated from both sides bought me extra time to work wet-into-wet. The rides in the background were also great composition elements and super fun to paint. It reminded me of painting bridges, only vertical.

Technically, this is a restaurant around the corner from Grand Central, but I took so many liberties that it is essentially a new place. I had just finished painting at the station and was walking towards a citibike to ride home when I noticed this busy happy hour spot. I loved the striped umbrellas and how they interacted with the traffic cones. The opportunity for a nice angular shadow is always a draw for me, too. I took a few photos and painted it on a rainy day a couple weeks later. I infused a bit of that wetness here in the foreground.

I painted this en plein air at Bethesda Terrace on an unusually hot April afternoon, with temperatures pushing nearly 90°F. After hunting down a sliver of shade with a clear view of the fountain, I finally got to work. In a funny twist, the fountain was completely full when I started, but entirely drained by the time I packed up. Since I laid down the water in one of my very first washes, I hardly noticed the change. This piece marks the third installment in my ongoing seasonal series of the fountain. The next one will be autumn.

Original watercolor studio piece of the view looking south down 7th Ave in Manhattan, just below Central Park. I bike these streets often and have many, many reference photos of the sea of cars that light up the buildings at dusk. It has an ominous red glow to it at this time of day, which I think is just perfect for watercolor.

Original watercolor painting of Bethesda Fountain in Central Park following a fresh snowfall. This piece focuses on the contrast between the statue and the soft, white snow and lake. Much of the background was done wet-into-wet, with very pale washes of neutral gray to suggest snow-covered trees. This marks part 2 in my seasonal paintings of the Fountain. In this large-scale studio work, I wanted to capture the distant, misty presence of the Brooklyn Bridge towers against the East River. Larger, more expansive compositions like this allow me to emphasize detail and wet-into-wet passages. The larger the work, the more space there is for the washes to flow.

This large painting looks across East Harlem following the mid-February 2026 blizzard. From a vantage point at 110th and 1st, I captured the snow settling across the rooftops. It creates a soothing pattern that lends itself well to the medium. I used broad wet-into-wet washes for a subtle overcast sky and left the white of the paper untouched for the roofs.

A full-sheet original studio painting documenting the aftermath of the February 2026 blizzard in East Harlem. This piece details the temporary landscape and textures of winter in the city, specifically the large piles of snow and trash at the 117th Street and Lexington Avenue intersection.

This painting shows the fog rolling through the East River in Manhattan. The city emerging from the fog is a magnificent view, and I have always wanted to paint it. Much of the painting aside from the Brooklyn Bridge was done wet into wet. I used the texture of the rough press paper to help define the atmosphere as the skyline begins to disappear into the mist. Details were added sparingly afterwards to indicate all that stuff down there.

Original painting of the food market on Main Street in Flushing, NYC. This was painted on a busy Sunday afternoon. Lots of people were out sampling food or getting snacks. The subway line runs directly above the market, creating an interesting tunnel effect that frames the figures nicely.

An original studio watercolor of Playa Barranco in Lima, Peru. Even in the morning, it was absolutely mobbed, so I wanted to capture that energy of the beach. Many people get up early to catch the waves before the crowds, but I was not early enough to beat them.

Painted on a sweltering Saturday afternoon in July, this painting captures a secluded view overlooking 5th Avenue from Marcus Garvey Park. Despite the heat, I managed to find a quiet spot in the shade where the process felt unusually smooth. That's the kind of flow that results in the most successful pieces.
